New research: AI agents get everything by default

Your AI agent has more access than it needs.

We measure what your MCP server or agent is allowed to do against what it actually needs, tool by tool and token by token. Then we help you cut it down, and prove it.

The problem

Agents get scopes, not jobs.

An agent is handed a token and a set of tools, then pointed at text it didn't write. Whatever that token allows, the agent can be talked into doing.

contacts.readdeals.readnotes.writefiles.readoffline_accesscontacts.writecontacts.pii.readfiles.writeexport.alldeals.writeadmin.users

01

Broad scopes at install

Asking for everything up front is easier than asking later. So a server that reads contacts often holds export and admin rights too, and a leaked token carries all of them.

02

Tokens that travel

Servers that accept tokens issued for other services, or forward them to other APIs, turn one stolen credential into access everywhere it works.

03

Text that steers tools

One sentence in a ticket, email or web page can make an agent call a tool nobody meant it to. The damage depends on what that tool is allowed to do.

89%

of hosted MCP servers that use OAuth give a connected agent everything the user can do, by default. So do 17 of the 18 most-used we checked.

How we work

Six promises, in writing.

Security testing means trusting someone with access to your systems. Here's what we commit to, in every contract, before we touch anything.

  • Signed authorization first

No testing of any system until a client representative has signed a written authorization and rules of engagement.

  • Staging before production

We test in staging or with test tenants. Production testing only with written approval and agreed limits.

  • Your data stays out of AI tools

Client data is never sent to third-party AI services without written consent. When AI helps, it runs on zero-retention API terms.

  • Deleted after 30 days

Working data is deleted 30 days after you accept the report, and you get a deletion certificate.

  • Fixed price, retest included

One price agreed up front. One retest within 30 days is part of it, not an upsell.

  • Public methodology

All 32 checks are published, with the standards they map to. You know exactly what you're buying.

Who does the work

Small on purpose. The person you speak to on the first call is the person who tests your system.

  1. 01

A named tester on every report

The person who tests your system writes the findings and signs the letter. You meet them on the scoping call.

  2. 02

    Senior hands only

Audits are led by our founder. When others help on larger jobs, they work under the same terms and are named in the report.

  3. 03

    Research in the open

Our method, tools and research are public, so you can judge the work before you hire us.

About Subcloak

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Something else? Email hello@subcloak.com or book a call.

Do you test production?

By default we test a staging environment or dedicated test tenants. If production has to be in scope, we agree limits in writing first: rate, time windows and which actions are off limits.

What do you need from us to start?

A signed statement of work and authorization letter, a staging URL, two test accounts in different tenants, and an engineer we can message when something needs a quick answer.

Do you send our data or code to AI tools?

Not without your written consent. Our own scripts and Scopegauge run locally. If we use an AI model to help analyse results, it is under zero-data-retention API terms and only with your approval.

Will our SOC 2 auditor accept the report?

Our reports name the tester, the scope, the dates, the method and the result of the retest, and map findings to SOC 2 and ISO 27001 controls. That is what auditors look for. If your auditor has a specific template, send it before we start.

How do you price?

Fixed prices, published in full on the pricing page. You pay 50% when the work is signed and 50% on delivery. No day rates.

Which time zones do you work in?

We're based in India (UTC+5:30) and overlap with Europe in the afternoon and the US East Coast in the morning. Readouts are scheduled at a time that suits your team.

Find out what your agent can really do.

Thirty minutes, no slides. Tell us what your agent or app touches and when you need an answer. You'll have a fixed-price proposal within a working day.
